CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Some of the biggest benefits available to us today are the result of rapid expansion
of information and communication technology. College students and new
employees are expected to understand and use current technology.
Although many students bring their own computers to college, some do not have
that luxury and need to know the location and hours of computer labs. The basics
of computer use are discussed: saving information at regular intervals, becoming
familiar with the computer’s system utilities, setting up e-mail accounts, and
consulting with professors who require special computer programs. Students are
encouraged to network, to enroll, if necessary, in technical courses, and to find
out how and where to acquire needed software.
Topics include accessing the Internet, finding information on the Internet, using
search engines, evaluating Internet information, personal benefits of using the
Internet, e-mail etiquette, ownership of information, using software suites, saving
energy, and maintaining computer hardware.
18
Tips for Success: Computer Usage
Use help pages, print out directions, and keep a personal log when
learning new computer programs.
Take appropriate measures to back up data.
When doing research, check accuracy and timeliness of Internet
information.
When communicating by e-mail, be courteous and check grammar and
spelling.
Use appropriate measures to maximize life of hardware and save energy.
Scenario for Success
A student who knows little about the Internet and computer software gets help
through workshops offered by the campus computer center. Discussion questions
encourage students to think about what areas of computer use they need to
explore.
Activities for Success
Students make a list of specific computer-related tasks they would like to learn
and design a plan of action. They work in groups to practice using search engines
for research, comparing them for ease of use and quality of information provided.
They learn how to evaluate virus warnings and how to protect their computers and
those of the people with whom they communicate.
Journal for Success
Students write about their success in accomplishing their computer learning goals,
how helpful their new skills will be in their work, and what feelings they
experienced while trying to learn new skills.
OBJECTIVES
After completing Chapter Two, students should:
Understand the necessity and benefits of staying current with computer
software.
Discover ways to learn new software programs.
Know how to use computers responsibly.
Know how to set up an e-mail account and learn e-mail etiquette.
19
Know how to access the Internet and use search engines to find
information.
Understand ways to evaluate Internet information.
Become aware of the personal benefits of using e-mail and the Internet.
STRATEGIES OF INSTRUCTION
To evaluate Internet sites, ask the reference librarian to present a brief overview to
the class, emphasizing the recognized credibility of articles in academic databases
that have been written in scholarly journals and other publications. Students will
have access to a spectrum of reliable information from academic databases such
as EBSCO, SIRS, and Matter-of-Fact.
If possible, have students work in small groups—in a computer lab or college
library—to explore and evaluate Internet resources. The following questions can
serve as a guide:
What type of site is this? .com? .org? .gov? .edu?
How can this information be relevant to the credibility of the site?
Who is the writer?
What credentials does the writer have?
How recently was the information updated?
Does the site acknowledge other links that might be of value?

CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING
CHAPTER 2
The following questions can be used for a quiz or for class discussion. On the
following page the same questions are formatted for use as a duplication master
or transparency to produce quizzes or discussion guides.
1. How can an employee stay current in using technology?
Employers may provide on-site training seminars, funding for classes, and access
to books and software that allow employees to learn programs at home.
Community resources include career centers, continuing education offices,
community centers, and community colleges.
2. What two procedures should you follow to ensure that you have saved your
document?
Save it at least every ten minutes and make at least one back-up disk.
3. Why is it important to be careful about downloading from Websites on the job?
Many employers are now using software that tracks the amount of time
employees spend on the Internet as well as the sites they visit. Employees have
been fired for visiting non-work-related sites and for spending excessive time online for personal use.
4. What are some advantages of using a listserve?
A listserve can help you find a group of individuals who are interested in the same
topic, and the whole group can interact through e-mail communication. Some
professors have put an entire class on a listserve to foster increased
communication and networking.
